Promoting Quality Higher Education in Punjab: Key Discussions at the Vice-Chancellors' Conference

The Punjab government is hosting an important vice-chancellors’ conference today in Lahore to discuss key challenges and opportunities in higher education. Organized by the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) and the Higher Education Department (HED), this event takes place at the Faletti’s Hotel and brings together thought leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to address pressing issues related to governance, academic quality, financial management, and aligning curricula with national needs.

The conference will be inaugurated by Dr. Farrukh Naveed, Secretary of HED and Chairperson of PHEC, followed by insightful speeches from esteemed keynote speakers, including retired Lt-Gen Muhammad Asghar, founding rector of NUST, and Muhammad Ismail Qureshi, Chairman of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

The conference is structured into several focused sessions, each addressing a crucial aspect of higher education:

  1. Governance Framework in Higher Education
  2. Financial Management
  3. Quality Assurance
  4. Curriculum Alignment with National Standards

In addition to these topics, the conference will be attended by prominent ministers from the Punjab government, such as Marriyum Aurangzeb, Senior Minister for Planning and Development, and Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Minister for Finance, along with other key figures in health, education, and industries. The presence of senior government officials and representatives from various sectors reflects the importance of this event in shaping the future of education in Punjab.

A key agenda of the conference is to discuss the role of public-private partnerships in higher education institutions. A senior official noted that discussions will focus on ways to introduce collaborations between universities and industries to ensure better infrastructure and governance, with a special emphasis on appointing vice-chancellors from within the bureaucracy.

Dr. Farrukh Naveed emphasized that the primary aim of the conference is to understand the challenges faced by universities and explore potential solutions, without any immediate focus on public-private partnership programs for public universities.

This conference is set to provide a platform for university leaders, policymakers, and business stakeholders to share ideas, debate solutions, and ultimately contribute to the advancement of higher education in Punjab.
